The series begins with the twins trying to be different from each other, as published by Bantam Books on July 1, 1986. They start dressing differently; Elizabeth moves into her own room and starts a sixth-grade newspaper; and Jessica begins to wear make-up and joins the Unicorn Club.

The Sweet Valley High covers (at least the originals) were iconic. I initially discovered them at my local library and was immediately drawn in by the stunning cover models and soothing pastel hues.

James Mathewuse, a book cover artist famed for his work on the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series (incidentally, he also did the cover art for another lesser-known series called Dream Girls – which I would love to get my hands on one of these days!) painted the covers.

Although I had read a few of Sweet Valley Twins novels (sent to me for my birthday) before finding the earlier series set in high school, it was the SWH series that truly drew me in. I’ve already addressed it here, so I’m not going to go into detail about the series. Instead, I’m concentrating on the covers themselves.

Although there have been multiple revisions, I still favor the original cover art for these volumes and have repurchased books 1 through 100, as well as some of the subsequent books and special editions, over the previous several years. They are very much a product of their period (1980s to 1990s), which only adds to their awesomeness.

Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield

Jonna Leigh Stack, a lovely soap opera actress, was the original model. This information was sent to me some years ago by blogger Cliquey Pizza, who was warned off by her reader Kathleen. I’d never heard of this actress before, but there’s no way it couldn’t be her.

Check out this post by blogger Red Lemonade for a plethora of comparison photographs — it’s eerie. (It also seems that Jonna herself confirmed this in a comment on Red Lemonade’s article, albeit the poster’s identity is “Unknown.”) James Mathewuse, the original SVH cover artist, did an excellent job of portraying Jonna’s appearance. (By the way, he’s still in business today – check out his website here.)

Annie Whitman (author)

It’s well known that Courteney Cox has been on several young adult book covers throughout the years, including color images for the covers of romance series like Sweet Dreams. There are several examples available, and I’ve included a few here. I’ve heard it said again and over that Courteney posed for Annie Whitman’s first appearance on the cover of Wrong Kind of Girl, but I’ve never heard or seen the actress remark on the subject.

But I totally believe it, particularly when you compare Annie’s hair to Courteney’s hair on other YA book covers and her appearance in the Bruce Springsteen video “Dancing in the Dark.”

Lila Fowler

One of my readers once said that Lila’s early covers reminded her of a young Jennifer Connelly, the stunning brunette movie actress. I hadn’t considered it before, but now I can’t unsee it and can’t believe I didn’t see it before. That’s absolutely her, in my opinion.

We do know that the future movie star posed for a slew of color magazine covers, including Sweet Dreams, among others. In fact, Jimmy Kimmel had her on his program a few years back to get her response to some of those covers. Sweet Valley High was not mentioned, but I’m persuaded. I really hope Jennifer mentions SVH at some point since Lila is such a memorable character.

Joelle Carter

This actress played Ava in the crime drama Justified, which was one of my favorites. I saw a significant similarity between Joelle and one of the photos on the cover of Sweet Valley Saga: The Patmans of Sweet Valley (which I haven’t read yet), and she did model as a teenager, so I guess I got one!
