Delilah Rene (born February 15, 1960 in North Bend, Oregon) is an American radio personality, novelist, and musician. She is best known as the presenter of a nationally syndicated weekly U.S. radio song request and dedication show, which has an estimated 8 million listeners. She debuted in the Seattle market as Delilah Rene, but she is now just known as Delilah.
Delilah’s family relocated from Coos Bay, Oregon, to adjacent Reedsport in 1969, where she attended school. She won a middle-school speaking contest judged by the proprietors of the local AM radio station in 1974. Delilah started her radio career providing school reports at KDUN in Reedsport. She quickly began developing commercials and was given her own time slot between shifts before and after school. After graduating from high school in 1978, she worked at many stations in Oregon and Seattle before developing the format she became famous for at KLSY in 1984.
The event, simply titled Delilah[3], starts at 7 p.m. and runs until nearly midnight local time. She answers phone calls from listeners in her home studio, offering encouragement, support, and musical dedication requests. Its headquarters are in the Pacific Northwest.
The utilization of callers is one of the show’s pillars. Most of the time, the caller will tell Delilah about her condition or narrative, and Delilah will then choose the music that she believes best reflects the caller’s circumstance. During the broadcast, callers are recorded and replayed afterwards, sometimes within an hour. Delilah also takes direct requests for music.
Originally heard exclusively on weeknights, stations who broadcast the program may now run it six or even seven nights a week, with most stations showing at least one weekend night (typically Sunday) in addition to a weeknight show.
The show launched on four stations in early 1996 and grew to a dozen by the end of the year. Broadcast Programming began distributing the show in 1997, which was subsequently purchased by Jones Radio Networks. Delilah joined Premiere Radio Networks in 2004, where she still works now. The show is broadcast on almost 170 radio stations including the Armed Forces Radio Network. Jane Bulman has been the original executive producer for almost 20 years.
Many of the stations that broadcast the program are owned by Premiere parent company iHeartMedia. WLTW in New York started airing her in November 2006. WLTW’s version of the show is a different, carefully adapted version of the show made only for that station, with music curated by local WLTW Programming. Zoe Bonet, KODA Houston’s long-running lovesongs presenter, was replaced by her in 2007. In March 2012, she debuted on KFSH-FM in Los Angeles, a Salem Broadcasting-owned station that broadcasts Christian music. The Christian Music formatted version of the show launched with this inclusion. iHeartRadio features an online Delilah feed where fans may hear the program at any time of day or night, regardless of time zone or broadcast area. Delilah is also on the air at WYJB (B95.5FM), an Albany, New York radio station in the evenings for listeners heading home from work on weekdays or weekends.
Delilah took a break in October 2017 after the suicide of one of her children.
On January 26, 2018, Seattle soft AC station KSWD announced that Delilah will begin hosting middays on the station on January 29, 2018. Her syndicated program was also taken up by the station for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings.
Rene acquired KDUN in Reedsport, Oregon, which broadcasts her syndicated program, in 2021.
Women between the ages of 25 and 54 are drawn to the program. Throughout the week, up to eight million people tune in to listen to the show.
According to a Bloomberg interview, Delilah’s estimated audience numbers have dropped in places where Nielsen Audio has used the Portable People Meter to monitor listenership.
The episode is featured in the Hallmark Channel television series Cedar Cove, which is based on author Debbie Macomber’s book series and takes place in a fictitious Pacific coast town in Washington state. Quotes and other inspiring pieces spoken specifically for the series by Delilah build up some of the story elements that occur during each episode.
The concert is also included in the 2018 film I Can Only Imagine, which is based on the life of MercyMe lead singer Bart Millard.
