I’m thrilled to bring you an interview with Brooke Birmingham, creator of the famous blog Brooke Not on a Diet!
Brooke shed 172 pounds by following the Weight Watchers program for four years. Losing so much weight is no easy undertaking, but Brooke clearly does not let her weight define her. She is quite pleased of her good physique and the efforts she has made to live a healthy life.
Her blog features tales about running, bicycling, beer, the odd recipe, and candid chats about life. She has also lately appeared in a number of televised interviews.

When I reflect back on my weight reduction journey throughout the years, there were certain factors that were crucial to my success. One of the most important things was always telling myself that I was worth it to become well. That I was worth all of the effort required to do so. Setting non-scale objectives for myself, such as trying a new fruit or vegetable or bicycling so many miles in a month, helped keep the trip moving and enjoyable. That helped shift my attention away from the scale and the significant amount of weight I was attempting to reduce. I’d also take days off from worrying about Weight Watchers. Sometimes my brain simply needed a vacation from all the math, and after a day off, I felt ready to go the following day.
My eating habits were the most difficult to change. I was accustomed to driving through several drive-thrus, eating pints of ice cream every day, and eating full bags of chips without thinking about what I was consuming. I didn’t know anything about cooking when I first began Weight Watchers. So I lived off frozen dinners for a while until I began setting objectives to learn new dishes. I now prepare the overwhelming majority of my meals. My culinary abilities have really developed over the years, and being in the kitchen is now my favorite place.
This question always makes me laugh because, OF COURSE, I have had instances like that. I’m far from flawless and have made more mistakes than I can count. That is what makes me human. When I make a mistake, I create a goal to concentrate on one simple item for the rest of the day, such as drinking my water. Just concentrating on one task and completing it may put me back in the correct frame of mind. Also, I don’t punish myself for mistakes; I recognize that they happen and try to concentrate on the wonderful things I’ve done recently. We might spend so much time focused on what we do wrong that it’s difficult to recognize that there are typically multiple good aspects that outweigh the bad.
One interesting fact about me is that I shed 172 pounds without joining a gym! I have a large collection of fitness DVDs (Jillian Michaels is my home girl! ), I ride my bike, and I like going for walks. Riding my bike along the Mississippi River is my all-time favorite thing to do. We have terrible winters in the Midwest, so I depend heavily on my fitness DVDs and make-up workouts from my Pinterest board during those months!
Blogging, in conjunction with social networking, has undoubtedly helped in keeping me responsible. I met some incredible folks via social media. In the realm of healthy living blogs, there is a fairly incredible community of individuals who all assist one other out. Whether it’s a friendly challenge or a swift kick in the pants when necessary.
Having readers also helps a lot since you have people waiting for you to write and will call you out if you don’t. When I originally began, it was simply a means for me to chronicle my journey; today, it’s a resource for individuals looking to lose weight or add some healthier components into their life. It’s incredible how many people it’s touched all across the globe. It’s incredible that a small-town Illinois girl can inspire someone all the way in Australia.
Would I suggest blogging to others? Both yes and no. Blogging isn’t for everyone, and it may be a lot of effort depending on the sort of site you desire. I do advocate chronicling your experience in whichever form works best for you. I like being able to look back on occasions when I achieved something amazing or just to see how far I’ve come. Blogging works for me because I like writing and I enjoy helping others.
That should read LEARNING THE ART OF MAINTENANCE. Lol. When I think I’ve got it figured out, I don’t. For me, it means not allowing old habits to sneak back in, not drinking too much beer, and sticking to all of the behaviors I established while losing weight (eating well and exercising more). I don’t punish myself for any weight gain; instead, I keep myself in control by limiting my pleasures.
Breakfast lately has consisted of a banana sautéed in coconut oil and cinnamon, tossed in some oats, or a green monster smoothie. Salad to go with the leftovers from the night before for lunch. Dinner generally consists of chickpeas in different ways, our favorite being stir-fry! Stir-frys are fast and simple to make; just saute some vegetables, add your protein of choice, and some stir-fry sauce mixture. Toss it on top of some rice or quinoa for a filling meal!
My level of activity is determined by my mood. It’s been bike rides and walks while listening to some of my favorite podcasts lately.
My most important piece of advise is to find out why you want this. Make a list of every single reason you can think of, from wanting to go off medicine to wanting to ride a roller coaster. Then save this list and refer to it when you’re feeling stuck. Sometimes all you need is a reminder of why you began in the first place to get back on track.
Also, remember that you are valuable. You are worth all of the effort required to get healthy, and it ALWAYS pays off in the end.
