The best Novel: Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line

Down market lanes crammed with too many people, dogs, and rickshaws, past stalls that smell of cardamom and sizzling oil, beneath a smoggy sky that doesn’t let through a single blade of sunlight, and all the way to the end of the Purple metro line lies a jumble of tin-roofed homes where Jai, nine, lives with his family. He can see the bright lights of the city’s magnificent high-rises from his doorway, and even though his mother works as a maid in one, they seem a thousand miles distant to him. Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line transports readers deep into this community to see the developing of a catastrophe through the eyes of a toddler as he has his first risky encounters with an unfair and confusing larger world.

Best First Novel: Please See Us

Two young women become unexpected friends over one disastrous summer in Atlantic City as strange disappearances touch perilously close to home in this clever, gripping debut reminiscent of Laura Lippman and Megan Miranda.

Best Paperback Original: When No One Is Watching

Sydney Green was born and bred in Brooklyn, yet her favorite neighborhood appears to change with the blink of an eye. Condos are springing up like weeds, FOR SALE signs are appearing out of nowhere, and the neighbors she’s known her whole life are going. Sydney directs her displeasure into a walking tour of her community’s history and present, and finds an odd and undesired helper in one of the newcomers to the block—her neighbor Theo.

However, Sydney and Theo’s journey through history swiftly devolves into a dizzying slide into paranoia and terror. Their neighbors may not have relocated to the suburbs after all, and the attempt to rebuild the neighborhood may be more lethal than anticipated.

When does a coincidence turn into a conspiracy? What happens when gentrification forces people out? Can Sydney and Theo trust each other—or themselves—long enough to discover the truth before they, too, vanish?

Best Fact Crime: Death in Mud Lick

An urgent, gripping, and tragic examination of the corporate greed that pushed millions of pain prescriptions into tiny Appalachian villages, decimating communities, from a Pulitzer Honor–winning reporter from the smallest newspaper ever to receive the prize in the investigative reporting category.
