Perry’s Jukebox: Talking Heads

Talking Heads

Once In a Lifetime ~ Talking Heads.

Talking Heads were an American new wave and avant-garde band formed in 1975 in New York City[1] and active until 1991. The band comprisedDavid Byrne (lead vocals and guitar), Chris Frantz (drums and backing vocals), Tina Weymouth (bass and backing vocals) and Jerry Harrison(keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals). Auxiliary musicians also regularly made appearances in concert and on the group’s albums. The new wave style of Talking Heads combined elements of punk rockart rock, avant-garde, popfunkworld music, and Americana. Frontman and songwriter David Byrne contributed whimsical, esoteric lyrics to the band’s songs, and emphasized their showmanship through various multimedia projects and performances. (Wikipedia)

How I fell in love with the Heads.

Talking Heads were not the average  band. I thought as a lad, so unique. A little scary for a 22 year old sold on Glamrock and Motown with a stoic allegiance to Bolan & Bowie. It was a time of stapress trousers, crombies, Ben Sherman shirts, cherry red braces and bleached Levis that overnight became , Oxford bags pinstripes, stacks, two-tone suits, pork pie hats, a duck-billed walking cane, suedehead haircuts or bouncy short perms. For the garish, military parade  jackets & kilts, swashbuckling shirts and male make up!

Then the Heads came along and turned that all upside down. It was so fresh. This was new wave romantic punk style with a rhythmic sexy bassline riff we all stomped to. The club scene sizzled like the latest fluorescent cigarettes. Burlesque velvet crushed velvet trouseres pinched at the ankle. It was so camp and  gaudy, but very European with retro slash jackets. Beau Brummel or Armani designer blazers with bright blood red Japanese  silk jacket linings. Maybe, get our thread and ‘tog-up’, crash a winebar in our cricket vest jumpers, blackbrushed denim shirts,  finished off with Union Jack Bows or pastel leather ties.  Unisex French wedge hairstyle highlighted to hell.. Milan black patent or white and cream ‘spat’ shoes.

Punk and New wave were at war but somehow weaved a spell as the ying and yang of 80’s music. We wore cravats and college scarves. Red brogues, or cuban heels and chinos. Girls wore basques  and garish rar-rar skirts with dreamcatcher earrings and fishnets. Lipgloss and rouge so heavy too appear almost Aunt Sally doll-like. The mullet had become Beau-font with super sticky gel and hairshine caked on like napalm.

What about the lyrics? I got a message of anti-mainstream. Anti globalist. But I bet you could fill in my gaps. It was the coolest band to arrive on the US/UK music scene with a psychotic edginess of its own. Pretty random compared to anything we had ever heard before but a dangerous bite of darkness and controlled social frustration in the lyrics about them. The lyrics in my view are pure literary art as is there music..

“Once In A Lifetime”

And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful
wife
And you may ask yourself-Well…How did I get here?

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money’s gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!
Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money’s gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

Same as it ever was…Same as it ever was…Same as it ever was…
Same as it ever was…Same as it ever was…Same as it ever was…
Same as it ever was…Same as it ever was…

Water dissolving…and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Carry the water at the bottom of the ocean
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money’s gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right?…Am I wrong?
And you may tell yourself
MY GOD!…WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money’s gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

Same as it ever was…Same as it ever was…Same as it ever was…
Same as it ever was…Same as it ever was…Same as it ever was…
Same as it ever was…Same as it ever was…
