Life of Pi

Amazing Books.

Life of Pi was written in 2001 by the Canadian author Yann Martel and this book has gone on to win multiple awards like the Man Booker Prize for novel of the year and the Asian American Prize for Literature. It tells the epic tale of survival on sea by a young boy called Pi who spends 227 days on a small raft accompanied by a small group of animals. This happens because the ship they were traveling on sinks during the voyage.

Life of Pi is the story of Piscine “Pi” Molitor Patel, a boy who follows three religions of Hinduism, Islam and Christianity and who lives in India where his father owns a zoo in the city of Pondicherry. After a brief stay in India, the Patel family decide to close their zoo and move to Canada due to the political turmoil in India.

However, a few days into the journey, disaster strikes and the entire ship sinks including all members on board along with the animals. The only survivors are Pi, an injured zebra, a hungry hyena, an orangutan and a tiger named Richard Parker who find themselves stranded on a small lifeboat.

Both the injured zebra and the orangutan are soon killed and eaten by the hyena. The tiger in turn kills and eat the hyena leaving just the two of them alone on the boat now. In an effort to avoid being eaten by Richard Parker, Pi portrays himself as the alpha male of the group and remains safe from harm. Since he does not want the tiger to die for fear of going mad by being alone on the boat, he fishes and feeds the two of them in order to stay alive.

In the final phase of Life of Pi, after 227 days, their boat comes ashore the coast of Mexico and the tiger escapes quickly into a nearby forest. The authorities find Pi alone but refuse to believe his story and hence Pi modifies his story slightly by leaving the animals out and including his mother, a cook and a sailor in it and questions the authorities as to which one they prefer.

Even though they do not believe a word of it, they prefer the first story which leads Pi to remark that it is much the same way with God – those who choose not to believe miss out on the better story!
