Did you know that there are a host of robots that you can purchase in the market today that are loads of fun to have around the house? The great news is that they are not that expensive. The following are some of the more popular robots available for less than $30. You will be amazed at what they can do.

The iDog is a very cheap robot. It is not made to really look or act like a dog though. In fact, it sort of looks like what you would get if you crossed a cell phone with a marshmallow and tossed in a little bit of dog.

The cool thing about this dog is that you feed it with music and it enthusiastically shows its delight through a series of movements and blinking lights. The robot canine can wiggle its ears, sway its head and flash its eyes in tune to the music. Manufacturers say the dog will actually develop a “personality” in accordance to the music you feed it.

Another fun and inexpensive robot is called “Shooter Bots – The Game”. This robot is a lot of fun if you or your kids are into shooter games. Basically, the way this robot works is that the robot comes after you and tries to shoot you with its lazer. You have to shoot the robot before it shoots you. The robot does not actually know to come after you. What happens is that the gun you have to shoot the robot with has a tracking device inside it that the robot follows. It is a brilliant concept. Reviewers reported hiding behind a couch only to have the robot bounce its lazer off a reflective object to hit them.

Then there is the Mini-Roboraptor from WowWee. This robot looks sort of like the raptors from the movie “Jurassic Park”. This robot is pretty cool if you are into autonomous robots. Basically the Roboraptor will walk around a room and curiously check out objects you have in the room. You can set different “aggression” levels so that if you put your hand in front of it, it will make a biting type motion.

Another popular and inexpensive robot is a robotic arm like the Amatron Robotic Arm. It is true that these robots do not really do much, but they are still fun. If you are seriously thinking about building your own robot, then a robotic arm is the perfect first step. Most robotic arm kits come with lots of educational materials, even more so than full body robot kits. You basically learn how to build a robotic arm and the dynamics of how robots move.

As you can see, there are many affordable robots on the market today for under $30. With the price of computer chips continuing to drop, you will see more and more robots selling under $30 which is great news for us robot hobbyists.
